The Lion's Club has a long active history in the Williamsburg area. I remember in the 60's when they held the Lion's Club Jamboree in early fall each year. It was held on a large empty lot across from the former Williamsburg Community Hospital. My father was a member of the Lion's Club and our family went to the Jamboree each year. My favorite thing was riding the ferris wheel after dark and seeing all the lights around town from high up. Feeling the gentle breeze filled with "carnival smells" and the watching the crowds look so small down below was such a thrill for me as a little girl. Now the empty lot is a parking lot and the hospital is gone with a newer one in its place. But the Lion's Club is starting a new family tradition... an Apple Festival, and it is sure to be a great time for families just as the Jamboree was years ago. It will be held at New Town at the gazebo on Oct. 24th from 10 am to 10 pm. You'll be able to enjoy fresh picked apples from Winchester VA, caramel apples, apple butter and apple cider. There is a pie baking contest with a top prize of $250.
There will be wine tasting, food vendors and live music. The Club will sell their Lion's cookbook and blind-made brooms. Admission is free so you have no excuse to miss this one! For more info call (757) 259-6878.
