March 2010 Archives

Spring is such a beautiful time in Williamsburg. The dogwood and redbud trees are in bloom along with beautiful gardens full of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. To me, Easter in Williamsburg wouldn't be complete without attending a church service at the historic Bruton Parish Church.
Growing up, Palm Sunday was always a favorite of mine when everyone got a palm cross to wear to the service. Then on Easter Sunday itself, attending church in all new lovely Easter attire was the best part of the day. This year, Bruton has many services available to the public. Palm Sunday services are at 9:00 and 11:15 am and 5:30 pm. Easter Sunday services are at 7:00, 8:30, and 11:30 am and 5:30 pm. Hope you will be inspired to attend.

Who doesn't enjoy an Easter egg hunt on Easter weekend? Shirley Plantation, Virginia's oldest plantation, will be hosting an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 3rd at 2:30. Be sure to bring your own basket as they will not be provided, but the top three egg finders will each receive a prize from the children's section of the gift shop.
Participants must be 3 to 10 years in age and be accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments will be available. Cost is included in the price of a regular admission ticket to the plantation. For more information, call 1-800-232-1613.
Mark your calendars for the opening of Bush Gardens on Friday, March 26, 2010 starting at 10 am. No theme park is quite like Bush Gardens in Williamsburg. I remember when it first opened in the mid 1970s. My brothers and I were so excited to have a park like it right in our own home town! It is still as beautiful today as it was then, sporting beautiful gardens, colorful buildings and thrilling rides, not to mention very entertaining shows. You feel like you are visiting Europe from a time in the past. Now is the perfect opportunity to visit as you can take advantage of the pleasant spring weather. Call 1-800-343-7946 for more information.

I was born and raised in Williamsburg, Virginia, and from a very young age, my love of the beautiful, historic town took root. My father worked for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for 21 years as an audio-visual engineer. As members of the historic Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, our family attended services regularly and sang in the choir. I was married in that church in 1987. During my college years, I worked every summer as an interpretive hostess in many historic buildings. Today I am a teacher and published author. Although I currently reside in the Columbus, Ohio area, my heart still belongs to the Colonial Capital.
