Pine Needle Basketry Class View other area events
When: Event has passed. Watch this page for updates.
Where: Virginia Living Museum
Cost: $85

Students of any skill level will spend an eight-hour day at the Virginia Living Museum creating a lovely and useful basket, using spartina grass, long leaf pine needles and an oyster shell. The spartina grass was sustainably harvested from upper salt marshes on the Northern Neck and Eastern Shore of Virginia. Long leaf pine needles were gathered from the grounds of the Virginia Living Museum, when they naturally shed in the fall of each year.

Oyster shell centers are crafted from the flat portion of native oyster shells which were harvested from the instructor's own oyster floats. The completed baskets will be approximately 8 by 6 inches and 1 1/2 inches deep, says instructor Jean Poythress Koon. Participants need to bring a small pair of needle nose pliers and scissors for cutting thread.

Other materials, including pre-made basket starts, will be provided. For ages 18 and up. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost: $85. To register, call 757-595-9135 or register online at the museum's website.
