QUESTION: Dear Mayor Zeidler – We live in Connecticut and have been to Williamsburg several times over the past 15 years. In fact, we will be in your beautiful town next week for vacation! Here’s my question – Generally speaking, how is the local economy in Wmsburg? In light of high national unemployment rates and a “bad economy”, how are the businesses doing in your city (restaurants along Richmond Rd, Merchants Square, CW, Busch Gardens)?? Thanks for your time. Maybe we’ll see you next week as we explore your great city and CW!!
ANSWER: Thanks so much for emailing me. First of all, I’m delighted to hear that you and your family are visiting Williamsburg next week. Loyal visitors like you that return again and again are so important to our community and economy. Thank you.
As for the economy, you’re right, these aren’t easy times for the tourist industry. Thank you for showing concern. And although we always hope more and more people will visit here and competition is stronger than ever, we are holding our own. Luckily we have a very strong drive market and not to sound immodest, but everything you could want in a vacation — history, golf, kayaking, bicycling, shopping and great restaurants, cultural activities and theme parks. The latest figures show unemployment improving in Virginia, so that’s a good sign.
All destinations are competing in difficult times, so that’s even more reason for us to appreciate your choosing to come back.
A couple of new things you might not have heard about yet — we have lots of new businesses coming in. Our High Street development has a brand new movie theater and restaurant and expecting several more to open soon.
If you’re here on the weekend, do try to stop by our Farmers Market at Merchants Square — we were just voted America’s Favorite Mid-Sized Market.
Another fun new thing is our brand new trolley that connects our major shopping and retail centers.
This may be a longer answer than you expected, but I guess what I’m saying is that we’re still a wonderful place to visit. I’m a regular at the Farmers Market, so I hope to see you there!
