You Asked Mayor Zeidler

QUESTION: Dear Mayor Zeidler – We’ve been waiting to hear about the school zoning changes for the new schools in Williamsburg. Our family just moved from South Carolina specifically for our children to attend Matoaka Elementary. We are in the process of purchasing a home in the Matoaka school zone (Governor’s Land). Now I am hearing that zoning might change. We’ve tried to get an answer from someone at the school board but either do not get a return call or cannot get any information. We are closing on this house on Nov 23rd so we will be devastated if our zone changes. We also have a rising 6th grader and are curious about the zoning for the new middle school too. When will zoning for these new schools be completed? Will the zoning for the Governor’s Land neighborhood change?

ANSWER: I’m delighted you’ve chosen to live in Williamsburg. But I can certainly appreciate your concern about your children’s education. I’m sorry you haven’t been able to get the information you need.

I contacted the school board, and I understand that the board is scheduled to see the first maps that the consultant will present on November 17, 2009 at the school board meeting at 7pm at the Stryker Building at 412 North Boundary Street. This is the first step. There will be refinement by the board and public hearings are scheduled for December and possibly January. Unfortunately, there is no way to assure anyone of any attendance zone at this time.

I would encourage you to attend the meetings and the public hearings. If you’re not able to attend tonight, the hearing airs live on Channel 47. It also replays several times during the week.

Although I’m sure you’ve already been to the website, here’s the link with information about the board and their schedule:

Specific information about the redistricting can be found here:

I hope this is helpful to you. As a former member of the school board and a parent myself, I know how important your interest and participation are.

Best regards,
Jeanne Zeidler
