Non Profit Spotlight: Heritage Humane Society

Heritage Humane Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the welfare of all companion animals. We care for injured, ill, stray, and unwanted pets of the Williamsburg, James City County and the First District of York County. Heritage Humane Society participates in community events, adopt-a-thons, visiting local schools to teach children about humane education and also take adoptable animals to local nursing homes for pet therapy visits.

 

Heritage Humane Society is always looking for volunteers for the following:

o Foster Care (This is a critical area of need - - you will be saving lives!)
Provide a temporary home for adult dogs/puppies, cats/kittens and cats/dogs with special needs (sick, learn to socialize with humans and/or animals) until they are ready to be adopted (Additional application, screening and training required.).

o HHS  Shelter Ambassador (mostly on Saturdays and Sundays)
Greet and assist guests of the shelter, provide shelter tours and answer guest questions, assist in showing  animals to potential adopters

o Mobile Adoption Outreach Program (mostly weekends)
Assist in the adoption of animals at PetSmart, PETCO and additional offsite locations.

o Special Events (Mostly evenings & weekends)
Help with various special events as the need arises (Please check HHS website and our volunteer board for information.).

o Nursing Home/Assisted Living Facility Visits (specific week days)
Bring puppies, kittens or calm dogs to nursing homes and assisted living facilities to socialize with the residents.

Volunteer Coordinator Assistant (Daily)
                Assists Volunteer Coordinator with planning special events, data entry, communicating with volunteers, making name badges

o Animal Behavior Training(training required.).
Work with dogs, puppies, cats and kittens on cage presence and basic obedience to increase their chances of a quick adoption.

o Cat Socialization (Daily 10-4:30)
Petting, brushing cuddling and playing with our cats/kittens to improve their temperament and quality of life while in the shelter.

o Dog Socialization/Dog Walking (Daily 8-4)
Walking  petting, brushing and playing with our dogs/puppies to improve their temperament and quality of life while in the shelter.

o Humane Education
Teach students from Pre-K through high school care, respect, and compassion and for all living creatures and safety around animals.

o Animal Camp Counselor (summer)
             Supervise and teach children during animal camps.

o Super Duper Clean up Crew(training required.).(8am-11:00am every day.)
Help clean kennels, cat cages, bowls, laundry, mopping, sweeping, etc.

o Shelter Maintenance
                Assist with general maintenance and repair (Fix broken cages/doors, yard maintenance, odds and ends, etc.).
